Apple has announced that its new AI chip, called the M4, will power the latest iPad Pro models and, therefore, promises significant gains in performance and efficiency, claiming that it will be 60x more powerful than its earlier models.
The new M4 chip is an upgrade from the M3 and M2 chips, which power the latest generation of iPads and the current generation of MacBook laptops.
It’s said that the M4 will deliver up to 1.5x faster processing speeds, which is 50% quicker than M2 chips used in the iPad Pro generation, and can perform 38 trillion operations, per second, which is a significant advancement for AI on-device capabilities.
It also incorporates ‘dynamic caching’ technology, ray tracing, and mesh shading to optimize image performance and bring more realistic graphics capabilities and complex rendering to the new iPad Pro.
The M4 chip should lead to faster and more advanced AI-powered features within iPad Pro models and its increased power efficiency should contribute to a longer battery life and a reduced environmental impact.
“The power-efficient performance of M4, along with its new display engine, makes the thin design and game-changing display of iPad Pro possible, while fundamental improvements to the CPU, GPU, Neural Engine, and memory system make M4 extremely well suited for the latest applications leveraging AI. Altogether, this new chip makes iPad Pro the most powerful device of its kind.” – Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Technologies
