🤔 Back in 2017, Facebook’s AI research team built two chatbots that began to communicate with each other, using their own, made-up language, which was unknown to humans, highlighting how AI can evolve in very unpredictable ways! (Facebook shut the project down to regain better control)
🔽 The Fed surprised the markets with a 50 basis point rate cut. This shows the intent to drop rates quickly, as inflation has cooled to acceptable levels. The tech sector initially reacted negatively to the news but in the long term, this could be a bullish catalyst for stocks. Learn more.
Our Report: LinkedIn has opted users in—by default—to donate their data for training the AI models that power its AI writing assistant and post recommendations features, without telling them.
🔑 Key Points:
US LinkedIn users (EU, EEA, and Switzerland aren’t affected, likely due to data privacy rules) spotted an ‘opt-out’ toggle in their data privacy settings, disclosing that LinkedIn uses their data/content to train AI models.
The toggle—which isn’t new—was set to ‘opt-in’, by default, and LinkedIn failed to update its privacy policy to reflect the use of data, meaning users had no choice over whether their data was/wasn’t used for AI training.
This ‘opt-in-by-default’ approach to scraping user data to train AI, comes just days after Meta admitted to collecting public Facebook and Instagram user data—for AI training—by default, since 2007.
🤔 Why you should care: Although LinkedIn has since updated its data privacy policy—explaining that ‘opting out’ means LinekdIn (and its affiliates, notably Microsoft) will not scrape users private data to train AI—there’s no mention of what will happen to the data they have already collected, and what training they have done with it, without users knowing.

Our Report: AI video start-up Runway, has partnered with Lionsgate—the Hollywood Studio behind the Twilight and Hunger Games franchises—to build a custom AI video generation model and train it on Lionsgate’s massive catalog of films and TV shows.
🔑 Key Points:
According to Lionsgate, the partnership is a “capital-efficient” way of creating content for the studio, as filmmakers, directors, and other creatives will have access to the AI model to “augment their work.”
Runway wants to give filmmakers “new ways of bringing their stories alive,” and also plans to license the model as a template for individual creators to build and train their own custom AI video models.
Although other studios—like Disney and Paramount—have had discussions about teaming up with AI providers—like OpenAI and Google—this is the first public partnership between a studio and an AI startup.
🤔 Why you should care: The partnership comes as filmmakers have raised concerns over the culling of jobs, thanks to AI, and after the SAG-AFTRA strike, last year, which saw performers stand up against the use of AI clones in production, but California Governor Gavin Newsom signed two SAG-AFTRA-backed bills this week, which should give more control over how AI is used within the industry.

JP Morgan Chase faced a growing challenge: Sophisticated fraudsters exploiting vulnerabilities in traditional detection systems.

OpenAI has hired the ex-Chief Revenue Officer at online learning platform—Coursera Inc—Leah Belsky, to be its first ‘General Manager of Education’ to bring AI products (namely its own) into more schools.
Belsky will share industry feedback with internal teams, bring AI products into elementary schools, higher education, and continuing education, and boost engagement with teachers and students.
This comes after OpenAI launched ChatGPT Edu for universities, in May, to help with tutoring, reviewing resumes, writing grant applications, and grading, enabling schools to responsibly deploy AI.
At its ‘Made on YouTube’ event, YouTube announced new AI features including a brainstorming tool that gives users video concept suggestions, complete with a title, thumbnail, and an outline.
It’s also integrating Google’s AI video-generation model—Veo—into YouTube shorts, allowing users to create effective backgrounds for green screen footage, and video clips (up to six seconds long).
Both features will be available later this year/early next year, along with other AI features like an auto-dubbing feature in multiple languages, and new community tools to help creators engage with fans.
