🔴 AI stocks had a red day on Tuesday across the board. NVIDIA was the biggest loser of the day dropping 1.6%. The large insider selling in NVIDIA since the start of the year may be a catalyst for this pullback. Learn more.
Our Report: Microsoft is facing a “phase 1” antitrust probe by the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) over its $650M partnership with AI start-up (and OpenAI rival)—Inflection—after it went on to hire most of its core team.
🔑Key Points:
The CMA launched its inquiry after Microsoft hired the co-founders of Inflection—Mustafa Suleyman and Karén Simonyan—and most of Inflections staff to work in its new consumer AI division.
They are concerned that Microsoft is employing a “quasi-merger” approach, which involves investing in start-ups and poaching all its talent, like a classic M&A, but this way, they steer clear of regulatory scrutiny.
The inquiry will take 40 days—until September 11—to complete, in which time, the CMA will gather evidence and invite comments from third parties, before deciding whether to proceed with a full probe.
🤔Why you should care: The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has also recently launched an investigation into whether Microsoft’s “quasi-merger” was designed to circumvent antitrust regulations and scrutiny, issuing subpoenas to both Microsoft and Infleciton, asking for details on their partnership negotiations over the last two years.

Our Report: Former OpenAI co-founder and Telsa AI Director, Andrej Karpathy, has launched a start-up–Eureka Labs–a “new kind of school that is AI native” and built, from the ground up with AI at its core.
🔑Key Points:
Eureka will build AI-powered teaching assistants that will guide students through course materials, bringing top courses to students, worldwide, regardless of geography and language barriers.
Karpathy envisions that human teachers will still design the course materials, but will work alongside and be supported by these AI teachers—who will be modeled on real people—to allow “anyone to learn anything.”
The start-up's first product will be an online AI course (called LLM101n) which will help students train their own AI—similar to the AI teachers the lab is building—although there’s no specific timeline for its launch.
🤔Why you should care: It’s unknown whether this ‘new’ type of AI schooling will simply be a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) with a chatbot, or if Karpathy plans to integrate it within schools, but the start-up doesn’t appear to have built or tested these AI teachers in the classroom yet, and speculation is rife over whether Eureka Labs is a self-funded project, or if Karpathy has received backing from investors.

Exa—an AI research start-up that’s redesigning search for AI—has secured $22M in Seed and Series A funding, backed by Lightspeed Venture Partners, NVIDIA, and Y Combinator.
The funding will enable Exa to build a search engine specifically for AI, as they believe that “AI will search the web more than humans” and, therefore, needs a more powerful search engine than Google.
It will leverage the power of large language models (LLMs) in the search process, enabling it to return the most relevant results to search queries, not the most search engine-optimized articles, as Google does.
