FACT OF THE DAY
🤔 OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman, quit Stanford University at 19 and started his first company—Loopt—a location-based social networking app that allowed users to see where their friends were and what they were doing, which he sold for $43.4M, making him a multi-millionaire before he turned 30.
🚗 AI and tech stocks bounced back after a turbulent session on Friday. Tesla was the out-performer on the day, rising close to 6%. This comes after news dropped that President-elect Donald Trump would seek to create a federal framework for self-driving cars. Learn more.
Our Report: Paris-based AI start-up, Mistral, has released a slew of new capabilities—in beta—for its chatbot, ‘Le Chat’ (which means “the cat” in French) to transform it into an all-encompassing work assistant, as it takes on key rival, OpenAI.
🔑 Key Points:
Like ChatGPT, Le Chat can now search the web and deliver search results with citations, generate high-quality images (powered by Black Forest Labs), and summarize complex PDFs and large images to provide insights.
It also has a design tool that can create and edit documents, presentations, code, web pages, and data visualizations, via text and voice-based commands, similar to ChatGPT’s ‘Canvas’ tool.
But most excitingly, it can automate repetitive, multi-step workflows—like payment processing or reporting—on behalf of the user, which ChatGPT can’t do (although this agentic functionality is, reportedly, coming next year).
🤔 Why you should care: Mistral (co-founded by former Meta and DeepMind engineers) has a mission to develop highly competitive models while “ideally making $$ in the process,” which is tricky—as it is for most AI startups—due to high costs, but Mistral is confident that it can achieve this because it’s refusing to chase AI “at all costs,” instead preferring to “place frontier AI” in customers hands, so they “get to decide what to do with advanced AI capabilities,” which has allowed them to be “quite frugal” with their capital.

Our Report: AI search startup, Perplexity, has unveiled a new shopping feature, for its US Pro subscribers, which allows them to view AI-generated product recommendations within the search results, and buy a product without having to visit a retailer's website or leave the search engine.
🔑 Key Points:
The product recommendations display for shopping-related queries and are visual cards that include an overview, pricing, and the pros and cons of a product, which users can expand to reveal more detail and reviews.
For a one-click checkout, users can store their shipping and payment information so all they need to do is press “Buy with Pro” and it will automatically buy the product (tax is auto-calculated) with no shipping costs.
The product recommendations are powered by integrations with specific sellers, via Perplexity’s merchant program, and for products not integrated, users will be directed to the retailer's website.
🤔 Why you should care: Perplexity has stated that the product recommendations aren’t sponsored, so they remain unbiased, which will help people believe that the results the AI engine is serving can be trusted, but this could all change if they begin taking ad revenue from sellers to get a preferential spot in the search results, and could even trigger regulatory intervention.

AI voice cloning start-up, ElevenLabs, has launched a feature so users can build conversational chatbots and customize things like the tone of voice and response length, which gives it an edge over OpenAI.
Agents can be built from scratch or a pre-made template, and users can choose the agent's primary language, first message, and system prompt to determine the agent’s persona.
Users can add their own knowledge base to train it, define what items the agent needs to remember—like a customer’s name—and what counts as a success or failure conversation.
Following in Amazon’s footsteps—which launched an AI research $110M grants and credits scheme, last week—Google has launched a similar $22M funding/credits initiative to help AI scientists and researchers.
The initiative comes from Google’s 19-year-old philanthropic arm, Google.org, and stands out from other big tech initiatives because it focuses on non-equity funding for global academic and not-for-profit institutions.
Providing this infrastructure and capital will undoubtedly help Google lock future customers—who need significant compute for their groundbreaking projects, which Google can provide—into its ecosystem.
