⚒️ New WhatsApp AI tools

Our Report: During its global “Conversations” conference in São Paulo, Brazil, Meta announced AI-powered features for WhatsApp business users, to improve the overall experience and help them connect with their customers and streamline operations.

🔑 Key Points:

• WhatsApp business users can use AI (via Ads Manager) to create Facebook and Instagram ads, remind customers about items left in their cart, and give them purchase-specific discounts.

• It’s testing an AI-powered customer support feature that will automatically respond to common customer queries but it plans to make it clear that responses are AI-generated.

• It’s also releasing ‘Meta Verified’ badges for businesses—which will give them better support and protection—and a one-tap WhatsApp calling feature for complex consumer requests.

🤔 Why you should care: Meta is launching these new AI features for WhatsApp business users to scale AI-powered conversational commerce, and while it’s giving these features to customers for nothing, the biggest revenue driver, on its WhatsApp business platform, is increased conversations, and this will lead to exactly that.

🤯 Adobe's shocking new rules

Our Report: Users of Adobe’s Photoshop, Illustrator, or other Creative Cloud applications have been left confused and outraged after noticing Adobe’s new terms of use.

🔑 Key Points:

• The new terms give Adobe the right to access user’s content through “manual and automated methods,” leaving users concerned that their work could be used to train AI models.

• Adobe has reassured users that it will just use this right to improve its “services and software”, but the terms suggest that users have little control over how their content is used and shared.

• Aside from the implication that their work will be used for training, without compensation, users are also concerned about privacy as some work under NDAs. 

🤔 Why you should care: When Adobe launched its suite of AI products last year, it used its own stock image library and other publicly available media to train its AI models, but the new terms suggest it will start using user-generated content instead, which could lead to copyright infringement lawsuits and privacy issues, and will undoubtedly damage customer's trust in their supposedly “ethical AI features.”

🚀 Humane seeks $1B buyout

Our Report: Rumors have been circling that AI Pin-maker–Humane–was looking for a buyer, and now, reports suggest that it wants over $1B for the company, and tech company, Hewlett-Packard (HP) might be interested.

🔑 Key Points:

• If true, the sale comes just two months after Humane started shipping the world’s first AI Pin—designed to replace smartphones—which was wildly panned by customers as “useless.”

• It also follows yesterday’s crisis, which saw Humane sending a warning to their customers about a hazardous battery cell within the charging case and asking them not to use it.

• And it also comes after reports that Humane fired a former software engineer for questioning whether the product was ready for market, preferring “positivity over criticism.”

🤔 Why you should care: Following poor reviews and whisperings of internal turmoil, Humane has just sold 10,000 devices (they expected to ship 100,000 this year), and with each device costing $700, they can expect to make $7.24M in revenue (not taking into account any canceled orders), which makes you question where the $1B valuation comes from.

🛑 Google bans unsafe AI content

Our Report: Google has issued Google Play AI app developers with new rules, to minimize inappropriate and prohibited content within the app store.

🔑 Key Points:

• Developers who distribute AI apps within the Google Play Store will need to put preventions in place to prevent the generation of “restricted content” which includes sexual and violent content.

• They must have in-app reporting mechanisms so users can report inappropriate content, and also “rigorously test” their AI tools and models, to make sure they respect safety and privacy.

• These new rules apply to apps that produce AI content, including chatbots, image generators, and audio apps but don’t apply to AI productivity tools or apps that “host” AI content.

🤔 Why you should care: Google has released this guidance to prevent the growing amount of nonconsensual deep-fake prohibited content in its store and has also banned ads from websites that endorse or create this type of content.

• Google’s AI-powered research and writing assistant—NotebookLLM—is now available in over 200 countries across the world, and comes with new Gemini 1.5 Pro features.

• DuckDuckGo has launched “Private AI chats”, which allow users to use AI models like—OpenAI’s ChatGPT—anonymously, meaning models can’t store chats and use them for training.

• Google has developed a new AI tool—SurfPerch—designed to help marine biologists better understand the coral reef ecosystems to help with preservation.
