After teasing us with a slew of powerful new AI updates, powered by its AI platform, Apple Intelligence, at its WWDC in June, Apple has been slowly rolling out these features in its iOS updates.

Next week, it’s due to launch the first rollout of its AI features—including AI-powered writing tools, image cleanup, article summaries, and a redesigned Siri—to the public, as part of the iOS 18.1 update. But this week, it’s releasing its second rollout of AI features, in its iOS 18.2 update, including the highly anticipated integration of ChatGPT! Unfortunately, these features are only available in beta, so members of the public will have to wait a little longer.

ChatGPT will be used to power Siri, which will detect when a question or task is too complex for it to answer or complete (like planning a travel itinerary or finding a recipe), and automatically defer it to ChatGPT after it’s asked the user for permission to do so. It will also power Apple’s Visual Intelligence tool, which, like Google Lens, will use the device’s camera to identify text, objects, and signs and translate them into different languages, perform specific tasks (like saving phone numbers in contacts), and provide contextual information.

Alongside the ChatGPT integration, Apple is also rolling out the emoji generator, Genmoji, which allows users to create their own, bespoke emojis based on descriptive prompts and photos. Plus, Image Playground, Apple’s AI image generator, which will be built into apps like Messages, Pages, and Keynotes and will allow users to create images based on text prompts and photos, will also be released, along with Image Wand which removes objects from photos, turns sketches into artwork, and cleans up handwritten notes.
