Microsoft is investing $1.7B in new cloud and AI infrastructure in Indonesia, marking the single largest investment in its 29-year history with the country.
Microsoft's investments will create initiatives and AI skilling opportunities for over 840,000 people, supporting the nation's rapidly growing developer community–which is the third-largest developer community on GitHub in the Asia-Pacific region and is projected to be one of the top five developer communities by 2026.
The upskilling program and initiatives will provide:
- students with AI education and training
- women with opportunities and support to build careers in AI
- young people with AI training to enhance their employability
- employees of nonprofit organizations with skills in AI
These initiatives and funding will help the Indonesian government achieve its “Golden Indonesia 2045 Vision”, which will transform the country into a global economic powerhouse, and enable them to financially benefit from the opportunities presented by the latest AI technology: it’s reported that AI could contribute nearly $1 trillion to Southeast Asia’s gross domestic product (GDP) by 2030, and Indonesia is expected to capture $366B of that.
“Indonesia’s collaboration with Microsoft on AI perfectly aligns with our ambition for a future driven by digital innovation. I am confident this partnership will open up new horizons for Indonesia, positioning us not only as consumers of technology but as pivotal contributors to the global technological supply chain.” – Budi Arie Setiadi, Minister of Communications and Information Technology of the Republic of Indonesia
