Although he still has two weeks to make his decision on whether to pass or veto the controversial AI Safety Bill, SB 1047 (designed to hold large AI companies accountable for causing serious harm with their AI models), California Governor, Gavin Newsom, voiced concerns that if he signed the bill, it could have an “outsized impact” and a “chilling effect” on the open source community, echoing similar sentiments from many across Silicon Valley, including OpenAI, Nancy Pelosi, the United States Chamber of Commerce, and Big Tech trade groups.
His main concern is that the bill only tackles the big AI vendors, that cause catastrophic disasters with their AI systems, such as taking down critical infrastructure, not smaller vendors that cause issues, day-to-day. He’s only interested in AI bills that can solve today’s problems without upsetting California’s booming AI industry.
Newsom is currently considering 38 bills related to AI and has just signed five, three designed to prevent election misinformation and two designed to stop actors' voices and bodies from being cloned by AI.
