FACT OF THE DAY
🤔 The highest-valued piece of AI-created art—the portrait of Edmon Belamy—sold for $432,000, with 31% of the US public believing that AI can create art, just as well as a human can.
⬆️ AI and tech stocks outperformed the overall market to start the week, with the Nasdaq gaining over 1% and the S&P 500, gaining just 0.24%. TSM & AMD were the standout performers as investors look for alternatives to NVIDIA. Learn more.
Our Report: During Amazon’s AWS re:Invent conference (taking place this week, in Las Vegas) they announced they were partnering with Orbital Materials—a startup (supported by Radical Ventures and NVIDIA) that uses AI to develop decarbonization technologies—to design and test AI-designed solutions for carbon-removal, chip cooling, and water efficiency at its data centers, helping them achieve their ‘net-zero by 2040’ goal.
🔑 Key Points:
Orbital has already used its AI platform—Orb AI—to develop an AI-driven molecular sponge that captures carbon dioxide, which they‘ve developed faster than ever, breaking new ground in carbon-removal efficacy.
As part of the multi-year agreement, Orbital will provide its open-source model to AWS customers so they can develop advanced materials and technologies, like batteries and semiconductors, more efficiently.
Both parties feel that the partnership will “set new benchmarks for carbon-removal and efficiency across the industry," and result in the widespread production of sustainability-focused innovations.
🤔 Why you should care: It’s been widely reported that, due to the growing demand for AI solutions, data centers are becoming an increasing part of the global emissions issue—due to the sheer amount of energy and water needed to power AI models—accounting for up to 10% of total power use in the US, so this partnership could set the stage for new eco-friendly tech solutions to cut carbon footprints and set new global sustainability standards.

Our Report: Godmother of AI, Fei-Fei Li, and her AI start-up, World Labs—which focuses on integrating spatial intelligence into AI models so they can put objects in different places and locations—have revealed an ‘early preview’ of their first project: An AI system that can create an interactive, ‘video game-like’ 3D world from just one, single image, directly from a web browser.
🔑 Key Points:
In a demo, the system took the 1942 painting, ‘Nighthawks,’ by Edward Hopper, and transformed it into a 3D world that viewers could interact with, zoom in/out of, and move around in.
AI can already turn images into 3D environments, but this is different as the output is fully interactive and consistent, meaning scenes obey the laws of physics and remain the same as the user moves around.
The 3D scenes are also modifiable, allowing users to apply real-time camera effects like dynamic lighting changes, animations, and other traditional film-making techniques, like depth-of-field adjustments.
🤔 Why you should care: While World Labs has emphasized that the system is just an “early preview” and, therefore, has a few limitations (users' movements are reduced to just a small area in the scene, and there are some rendering issues), they are planning to release the tool in 2025, targeting creatives within the video game and film industries, to speed up the creation of interactive, immersive worlds which traditionally take years to develop, with astronomical budgets.

The Browser Company (maker of the Arc Browser) has teased a new web browser—Dia—which is expected to launch in early 2025, and has AI-powered features designed to simplify internet-based tasks.
Dia can find facts to help users “write the next line” and come up with ideas, it can also summarize content and understand the entire browser window, adding links you’ve opened into an email, for example
Users can ask it to fetch/email documents, schedule meetings, and even add items from an email into a shopping cart, just like an AI assistant, which plenty of others are currently developing: Will Dia be any different?
Despite CEO—Sam Altman—expressing his dislike of ads (in a recent fireside chat with Harvard students), saying AI+ads unsettled him, it looks like OpenAI is planning to incorporate ads into ChatGPT, to boost revenue.
ChatGPT is costly to run and, currently, OpenAI just relies on subscription revenue to remain afloat and maintain its position, so they’re having to weigh up alternative revenue streams, like an ads business model.
Although they will be “thoughtful” about when and where they implement them, a chatbot salesman could be irritating but equally, an ‘AI agent’ that makes choices based on ad spend, could be predatory.
