🤔 According to Hootsuite, ChatGPT reached 100M users by February 2023—3 months after launch—which is faster than any other app, and eMarketer says that over 20% of Americans will use ChatGPT, at least once a month.

🍟 AI and tech stocks continue to slide during Tuesday’s session the Nasdaq losing 0.34% on the day. Google made a massive breakthrough with its chip, Willow. This represents a significant advance in solving error-correction problems that have long dogged quantum computing efforts. The chip performed a computation in under five minutes that would take current supercomputers a near-eternity to do. The stock rose over 5% yesterday on the news. Learn more.

AI VOICE

🔊 ElevenLabs used for Russian propaganda

Our Report: According to threat intelligence company, Recorded Future, AI voice generation tech from ElevenLabs (whose tech was also behind the bogus robocall that impersonated President Biden and told New Hampshire residents not to vote during a primary election, in January), has been used in fake and misleading “news” videos—created by a Russian influence group, Social Design Agency—which were aimed at undermining Europe’s support for Ukraine.

🔑 Key Points:

• The videos were a campaign—Operation Undercut—targetting Europeans, using AI voiceovers to tell them that Ukrainian politicians were corrupt and question the usefulness of military support for Ukraine.

• Several AI voice tools were likely used to create these videos, but Recorded Future named ElevenLabs after it submitted clips to its AI speech tool—which detects if audio was created by ElevenLabs—and got a match.

• ElevenLabs tech also enabled the Russian group to release the videos in multiple European languages (including English, German, and Polish), but according to Recorded Future, the impact on public opinion was minimal.

🤔 Why you should care: The Social Design Agency has already been sanctioned by the US government for building “over 60 websites that impersonated genuine news organizations in Europe”, then using “bogus social media accounts to amplify the misleading content” back in March, believing the Government of the Russian Federation was behind the campaign.

🫧 Google’s $20B clean energy plans

Our Report: Google has signed a $20B deal with Intersect Power (renewable energy developer) and TPG Rise Climate (Hedge fund) to build industrial parks around the US, designed to house data centers next to clean energy (namely solar, wind, and battery) farms to reduce pressure on the struggling electricity grid.

🔑 Key Points:

• The partnership aims to build these industrial parks by 2030, to connect solar, wind, and battery energy power to data centers to increase clean energy use, while reducing pressure on the grid, and meeting growing demand.

• The first project is already underway and is expected to start operating (at an unknown site) in 2026, demonstrating how quickly renewable energy infrastructure can be built vs. traditional power solutions like nuclear energy.

• This will pressure nuclear power projects by Microsoft (which is restarting a reactor at Three Mile Island, expected in 2028) and Amazon (which is building small nuclear reactors, expected to launch in 2030).

🤔 Why you should care: Google’s ‘world-first’ $20B partnership should help to address the gap between the energy demands of AI (big tech companies need colossal amounts of energy to power their rapidly growing data centers) and available power from the electricity grid, whilst also aligning with clean energy climate goals, and could serve as a blueprint for sustainable AI infrastructure development.

🗣️ OpenAI backs $1B language start-up

• Speak, an AI startup, backed by OpenAI, is building an AI platform designed to help teach languages—through hearing and talking—and is raising 78M, at a valuation of $1B to help advance development.

• To grasp new languages, learners traditionally start with reading/writing, but native speakers learn by hearing/speaking, so Speak’s platform generates audio conversations and listens to users’ responses, to improve learning.

• OpenAI invested in Speak in 2022, with a “shared vision of revolutionizing language learning with AI” but is also allowing the start-up to use its tech to expand the number of languages users can learn with the platform.

LAUNCHES

🔨 OpenAI releases Canvas 

• For the fourth day of its “12 Days of OpenAI” campaign, OpenAI gave all ChatGPT users access to its new editing tool for coding/writing—Canvas—which was first introduced, in beta, in October.

• Canvas allows users to make inline edits to lengthy pieces of writing or sections of code generated by ChatGPT, by highlighting parts of the AI-generated text, and making their own edits or asking ChatGPT to.

• OpenAI has also added the ability for users to get ChatGPT edits and suggestions via comments, and it can now recognize when the input is code, and automatically switch to the code editor to find bugs.
