🧠 News: US bans export of NVIDIA chips to China & Middle East
Read Time: 4 minutes
Our Report: The US has expanded export restrictions of Nvidia chips to regions beyond China amid militaristic concerns, now including some countries in the Middle East.
🔑 Key Points:
These curbs specifically affect Nvidia's A100 and H100 chips, designed for AI/ML tasks, and have recently received praise for being some of the most powerful chips on the market.
It remains unspecified which countries in the Middle East are affected. Luckily, most of Nvidia's sales are from the US, China, and Taiwan, with only 13.9% of sales coming from other countries.
US officials informed Nvidia that such regulations would address concerns about the products used for military purposes in the Middle East.
Nvidia's competitors—Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Intel—have revealed plans to create less potent AI chips for export to the Chinese/Middle Eastern markets following similar restrictions.
🤨 Why you should care: These export restrictions highlight the ongoing technological tug-of-war between the US and other global players, with all nations currently vying for tech supremacy through AI.

Baidu just received approval to launch its AI bot, Ernie, to the public—establishing them as the first company to obtain such permission after new regulations were introduced requiring every AI company operating in China to first receive approval from the government.
This move gives Baidu a considerable head start on the competition and could lead to a monopolistic hold on the Chinese market.
