Google first announced it would be allowing its users to build custom chatbots—called Gems—which would be powered by Gemini, and could help with specific, user-related tasks like brainstorming or writing captions for social media, at its I/O conference in May.
Now, they are days from launching this feature to Gemini Advanced, Gemini Business, and Gemini Enterprise users on mobile and desktop devices in over 150 countries and “most” languages.
According to Google, Gems are personalized AI experts that can be customized with distinct personalities and enabled to perform specific tasks to save time on repetitive, tedious, and difficult tasks. Just like OpenAI’s custom GPTs.
Also like OpenAI’s custom GPTs, Gem users can name their chatbot, and give it detailed instructions (which it will remember, so users don’t have to retype the same instructions each time they interact), telling it what type of expert it needs to be and what tasks it needs to complete.
Google has also built a set of pre-made gems, including a learning coach, which helps break down complex topics; an idea brainstormer, which provides inspiration; a career guide, which unlocks career potential; a writing editor, that evaluates writing and provides feedback, and a coding partner to help with coding skills.
So if a user doesn’t want to create a custom Gem from scratch, they have the opportunity to use one of these, pre-made Gems.
