Elon Musk’s AI start-up, xAI, has released two new versions of its AI chatbot, Grok: Grok-2 and Grok-2 mini which, according to xAI, are “a significant step forward” from the earlier model, Grok-1.5, which was only released a few months ago.

Although Grok-2 is only available in beta to Premium and Premium+ X users, according to early testers, Grok-2 is better at code generation, writing, and news summaries (something the original Grok was terrible at). It’s also been tested against industry benchmarks and was found to excel in mathematical understanding, reading comprehension, and vision-based tasks.

The new Grok-2 also has an image generator. But users have flagged that it doesn’t have many restrictions or safeguards when it comes to the images it's allowed to produce. For example, users have been able to generate images of political figures, which, with the US elections looming, is concerning, and many believe/hope Musk will be required to integrate stricter limitations to prevent the spread of dangerous misinformation.
