In the first design change since it launched in 2022, OpenAI has revealed a new ChatGPT interface called Canvas—in beta for ChatGPT Plus and Teams users—that opens in a separate window and allows writers and coders to iterate ChatGPT’s output, without having to re-type prompts.

"Although the [ChatGPT] interface is easy to use and works well for many tasks, it’s limited when you want to work on projects that require editing and revisions. Canvas offers a more natural interface for collaborating with ChatGPT for this type of work."

After activating Canvas, writers will be able to use a toggle in the sidebar to lengthen or shorten the ChatGPT-generated text. They’ll be able to highlight specific parts of the text and ask the chatbot to add emojis to it, change the tone and reader level, and ask questions about it. They’ll also be able to translate the entire text into a different language.

For coders, they’ll be able to ask the chatbot to review a piece of code (and ask questions about it), add in-line comments, translate the code into plain English, or change to a different programming language such as JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, C++, or PHP.
